Sub: Maintenance of Mhow Agiary (Adarian Saheb) and Tower of Silence – appeal for funds.
Dear Sirs,
Attached herewith is a statement showing the cost of maintaining our Agiary and Tower of Silence, as follows:
Actuals as per Audited Accounts for FY 2018-19.
Estimates for FY 2019-20 and beyond.
The Mhow Agiary, consecrated in 1857, is the only Atash Adarian, in North and Central India. Prior to that an Atash Dadgah was consecrated in 1846. The Tower of Silence (Dokhma) was established in 1840. Between 1818 and 1839, the dead bodies of the Parsi Zoroastrians of Mhow were interred in graves situated behind the Sagdi (Prayer Hall) on a Hill (outside Mhow Cantonment, where the Tower of Silence is located today). In 1840, a travelling priest from Iran, Dastur Bahman, was instrumental in creating a Dokhma, established on the same hill, about 3 miles from Mhow Cantonment. This Dokhma, located on a patch of land measuring approximately 11 acres, was gifted by The Holkar State Durbar solely for the purpose of interment of dead bodies of the Parsi community.
We are currently constrained from selling any of our defunct properties to raise capital, the interest from which will enable us to fully maintain our Agiary and Dokhma, and which will also enable us to fulfill the remaining Objects of our Trust. We have filed an SLP in the Supreme Court seeking permission to sell, however until the said SLP is settled, our budget is severely restricted for charity, maintenance of properties, staff and administrative expenses, and of course maintenance of the Agiary and Tower of Silence. Unfortunately the current national situation viz. Covid-19 has led to delays in settling our SLP in the Supreme Court.
Thus, we appeal to you for assistance in the maintenance of our Agiary and Tower of Silence this year and maybe for another year. Your favourable response and benevolent assistance at this difficult period will be very appreciated.
Please note that in case you are unable to assist us with a donation, we are also in a position to accept interest free term loans/deposits, the capital amount of which will be refunded to you upon maturity, free of any interest. We trust that if you are unable to assist us with an outright donation, you may consider this option to tide us over during this uncertain time, which would be of immense help to us.
Awaiting your prompt and favourable reply.
With kind regards,
Zal J. Cowasji
